Body Image
What is Body Image?

Body image is defined as a person's personal relationship with their body, including their beliefs, thoughts, feelings, and actions that pertain to their physical appearance. Body image is one part of a person's self image.


What are the Origins of Body Image?

The origins of a person's body image include both cultural and personal factors. Cultural factors include the media, ethnicity and race. Personal contributors include family of origin and peer messages and experiences, athletics, physical/sexual/verbal abuse, and mood disorders.


How can Body Image be Improved?

Education, parental influence during an individual's younger years, and changing a person's thought processes about their body are key pieces to improving body image. In addition, eliminating self-destructive behaviors, as well as a variety of experiential techniques are extremely valuable.


Is this really possible?

Mending the relationship between a person and their body is a long and challenging process. However, with commitment, strength, perseverance, hope and support, a person can develop a healthy and loving body image.
