  • 85% of American women are dissatisfied with their appearance.
  • 2 out of 5 women and 1 out of 5 men would trade 3-5 years of their life to achieve their weight loss goals.
  • It is estimated that 10 million women and 1 million men in the United States suffer from an eating disorder.
  • The average American women is 5'4" and weighs 140 lbs. In contrast, the average American model is 5'11" and weighs 117 lbs. which would be considered anorexic.

What is an Eating Disorder?

Eating disorders are serious and complex emotional and physical diseases. Without treatment eating disorders lead to mood swings, physical complications and potential death. Eating disorders include Anorexia Nervosa, Bulimia Nervosa, Compulsive Overeating, Binge Eating Disorder, and Obesity. Eating disorders have the highest mortality rate of all mental illnesses. An eating disorder is an outward symptom of an internal issue.


What are the signs and symptoms?

Some signs and symptoms include:
  1. an excessive concern about weight and body shape
  2. unexpected weight loss
  3. disappearing to the bathroom after meals
  4. secretive eating or missing food
  5. loss of menstrual cycles
  6. evidence of laxative, diet pill, or diuretic use
  7. food group avoidance
  8. skipping meals
  9. avoiding eating in front of others


What are the treatment options?

Eating disorders require specialized professional treatment for recovery to occur. Dr. Dan Trathen and his associates recommend treatments that include physical examination and monitoring, individual therapy, as well as couple or family therapy as needed, dietary counseling, and psychiatric medication if needed. Treatment may take place in settings including outpatient, intensive outpatient, partial hospitalization or inpatient depending on the severity of the disease.
